We are delighted to announce a new partnership between hub101.earth and Marine Conservation Institute, a nonprofit organisation based in the San Francisco Bay Area, dedicated to protecting the ocean by advocating for stronger protections for our most important ocean places.
The ocean is the foundation of life on Earth. It covers 72% of our planet, regulates our climate, supplies the oxygen we breathe, supports billions of people through food and livelihoods and sustains an extraordinary diversity of life. Yet our ocean is facing multiple threats at a global scale, in particular from the effects of climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss.
Now, more than ever, we are recognising that protecting the ocean is essential to the health, security and prosperity of our planet and people. While the momentum behind ocean conservation is building, it remains hugely important for the public and global stakeholders to understand the challenges and opportunities for our ocean and advocate for solutions from all angles.
To support the movement, last year we launched our Water & Oceans 101 e-Learning series, designed to cover important topics concerning our freshwater and ocean ecosystems. Through our new partnership with Marine Conservation Institute, we aim to share expert and science-based knowledge on marine protection to a broad audience, through collaborating on new e-Learning modules and online videos.
Yuejia Peng, Founder and Managing Director of hub101.earth says: “Life began in the ocean, yet we have not done a very good job in looking after it. Many of us are concerned about what’s happening – coral bleaching, plastic pollution, and highly damaging fishing practices – but are lost when it comes to what to do about these difficult problems. But we can, and must, do something – each and every one of us has a role to play – and it starts with understanding the problems and learning about the solutions from experts in the field. Marine Conservation Institute is a top ocean conservation organisation that is a leader in defining how and where we should protect specific marine areas – one of the most impactful solutions. I’m hugely excited about this partnership – we look forward to learning from their expertise and amplify our shared goals.”
Sarah O. Hameed, Marine Conservation Institute’s Blue Parks Director and Senior Scientist, says: “One of the biggest challenges in ocean conservation is helping people understand both the scale of the problem, and what effective solutions look like. Through this partnership with Hub101.earth, we’re excited to break down complex topics—from the state of the ocean to how marine protected areas work—and share practical, science-based guidance on how to effectively protect life in the sea.”
